A selection of the studio photo's, the photo's (not posted) with a model are all really ugly so i have to shoot them again. Or maybee ask a real photographer to do it for me.

A final post before my exams on monday. I finished the first design about a week ago, i'm quite happy with the result. Some of the problems and solutions for this design helped me with the other designs, so today i finished four other designs. I want to make six since i have some time left. I had two ideas, one with a leather strap around the ankle and one with knotted elastics, i liked the knotted elastic but i felt like it was totally different compared to the other five. However i still chose this one, i simplified the knots and used thicker elastic so i think it go's really well with the others.

I'm working on a designbook (and i'm using this weblog as content!). And luckily i can use the schools photostudio on friday. I still have to find a model though.

Some pictures of the designs in progress. Made some minor adjustments for the soles. And i finally decided the colors and materials. I didn't know what wood to use (there's so many nice kinds of wood). I really wanted to use Ebony and Purperheart, Ebony is a black kind of wood and Purperheart as you might expect is Purple. The downsides are that Ebony is really expensive about 45.000.- per m3 and Purperheart loses it's color. So i decided to use a cheaper kind of wood (Tulip). I did some experiments to colorize the wood, i used different kinds of ink and varnishes. I found a method using different kind of layers coloring the wood in a really nice purple and black.

A few more samples. I have a pretty good idea on how to realize these two designs, and i worked out most of the small details.



And something else. I found my leica m2 camera and there was a film inside. It's really cool how old camera's with film can work like a small time capsule. Here are some pictures from about a year ago.

The designs will be quite simple so i want every detail to be perfect. Here is a selection of some stuff i did today. I think i know how to finish most of the designs, but i still need to work out a lot of details.

Here are some pictures for the soles. I came up with an idea to make heels out of different parts that are held together with screws or rope/elastic. This gave me a good insight how to continue on the soles for the flip flops.

I have some pictures where Rosa is wearing the sample, it really looks cool! I'll post them tomorrow (they are on a school computer).



Here is a picture of a few materials i'm using. I'm not using the yellow elastic, but i couldn't find the same size in black yet.

Ok first things first! I started about a year ago experimenting with ropes and elastic (see the images in the post before), at that point i didn't know how to convert the samples into shoes so i converted the lining that the ropes created into the lining for the shoe. That resulted into this design.



Right now i decided to focus and start designing on flip flops. The general idea is a sole and a y construction between the big toe and the index toe (i actually had to look up how that's called haha). The origin from the flip flop lies in Japanese footwear called Zori, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z%C5%8Dri. After some research i found more info on Zori, Geta and Waraji. Obviously this was very inspiring as it was fun to see the resemblance in my experiments and samples. So i picked up where i left of. Here are 18 pages of samples, it's most of i have done so far in the past 1,5 month.



At first i actually had no idea what i was doing, but after some meetings with teachers and discussing it with Rosa (a girl in my class who make extraordinary shoes!) it slowly is making sense. Right now i'm focusing on the construction, connection and purity. I also want to add some more layers or something it needs more depth.

The soles are still very flat, quite boring actually. So i'm sticking more to Zori's. I have some new models and samples but i stil have to photograph them. So more later.

Yay! I finished my shoes this week, made photo's and finished my film.

Still have to do some small things on all 3 bags, make photo's and finish my book. But i have till monday!

Updates, made some new technical drawings for my book, and 2 more detailed samples for the bagpack and a shopper. Next week i'm going to realize all three bags. For the shoes i'm somewhere over 50% done.
